My Personal connections

As a teen, I notice that the some students of the middle school community worry about their looks too much. Basically, people "level" themselves on how they look. Although it's good have self confidence, sometimes it can get out of hand. It can end up hurting someone.

In the book, Uglies by Scott Westefeld, there are two different groups-pretties and uglies. Everyone thinks that being pretty will lead to a fun, good happy life just because they are perfect, so everyone wants to become pretty. In school, some people think the "pretty" clique is what they want to become. So they change themselves although everyone is perfectly equal. The students that think they are not good enough is Tally. Tally is so focused on turning pretty, she becomes a spy and betrays Shay to turn pretty. I personally think everyone is equally pretty in their own way, so in this case I would be Shay.

There are many people out in the world that get plastic/cosmetic surgery because they feel like they are not good enough. My parents are from South Korea. South Korea has the highest rate of plastic surgery because actors/actresses, singers, and Kpop idols get double-eyelid and higher nose surgeries to look like the western people. Average people in Korea also get surgery because they don't feel self confident.

The book Uglies is a good way to teach, in a story format, how every one is equally beautiful and you don't need to do anything to yourself to become "pretty". Everyone should be blessed and positive on the way they look. Uglies is a good reminder about teaching self confidence and friendship not based on the way you look.
